Are worth much more than their weight in gold . This will be the 4th
winter in a row that my firewood needs will be met by the largess of my
neighbors . And they think I'm doing them the favor ! Actually it's to
our mutual benefit , they need these trees harvested for one reason or
another and I need the firewood . And in most cases I don't have to drag
it out of the woods . I don't always get the species I want , but hey
it's free for the labor of harvesting it and around here it's almost all
hardwoods . I'm going to be getting a few pines too , we'll see how it
burns . There are times when oak/hickory actually gives us too much heat

We had a freak wind storm this summer so there is a lot of pine for the
hauling. A ponderosa pine has a very shallow root structure, not enough to
hold up a 70' tree in 90 mph winds. Watch out for creosote buildup.

Western larch is the preferred firewood here, but you burn what you can
get.

I usually burn oak and hickory since they are the predominant species
here . We have a lot of sweet gum too but I don't usually seek it out
since it's lower BTU and burns dirty .

'Hardwods' in western Montana are mostly cottonwood and aspen, neither of
which are worth the trouble except for a campfire. There are some paper
birch if you know where to look. Rocky Mountain maple is a shrub, the
other maples are ornamentals somebody planted.

It was a learning experience when I moved from New Hampshire. Ash was
popular. It grows relatively fast and you can burn it green in a pinch.

I miss the hardwoods this time of year. Larch turns sort of a golden
yellow but that's about it.

The maples are going red , the hickory tree in the iris bed is a
beautiful shade of gold ... and the hills are becoming ablaze with a
riotous mix of reds and oranges sand golds ...

That's as good as it gets unless I go into town where they planted maples
and chestnuts.

A Forest Service honcho from back east made legendary status when he
looked up on the mountains and asked "What's with all the dead trees?"

That's pretty !
On the plus side we can enjoy the pretty without the roads clogged with
leaf peepers.

Several years ago about a half dozen trees fell downhill between my and
neighbors lots. We split the cost of the tree cutter and I told him he
could have all the firewood. He was quite pleased but unhappy when he
found he was going to have to bring the logs up hill and split them.
Firewood to him in the past was bought split and stacked.
