PermalinkNEW YORK (AP) — A pilot program testing AI-powered weapons
scanners inside some New York City subway stations this summer
did not detect any passengers with firearms — but falsely
alerted more than 100 times, according to newly released
police data.
Through nearly 3,000 searches, the scanners turned up more
than 118 false positives as well as 12 knives, police said,
though they declined to say whether the positive hits referred
to illegal blades or tools, such as pocket knives, that are
allowed in the transit system.
Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat and tech enthusiast, announced
plans to pilot the portable scanners, manufactured by Evolv,
at a handful of subway stations this past summer in an effort
to deter violence within the subway system.
. . .
Not very "intelligent" after all - and a worrisome,
Stasi-esque, intrusion on individual liberties.
However let's take it for the stats for now. It seems
almost nobody is actually bringing guns onto the
subway. General-purpose knives ... no getting away
from those, VITAL tools for living/working for the
past 300,000+ years.
Now EVIL people ... seems there'd be a market for
'ceramic' knives - something such systems won't
detect. Yes they CAN be very very deadly, basically
a razor-sharp shard of "glass".
However the MAIN problem on the subway does NOT seem
to be 'armed' people, but STRONG-ARM thugs. They can
and will BEAT you to death for your money, your stuff,
or just for laughs.
"Civilization" is in decline. Things are getting more
and more "Clockwork Orange". The center can no longer
hold - and there ARE those of influence who WANT
it that way. Face up. Act accordingly.
